We have carried out an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) on the everdrop bathroom cleaner, comparing it with a conventional liquid detergent. With this, we want to show that our refillable products not only save plastic waste, but are also the best solution, in terms of environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions.

AFTER JUST 3 CYCLES OF USE, THE EVERDROP BATHROOM CLEANER TAB IS BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT IN ALL SUSTAINABILITY CATEGORIES.

THE EVERDROP BATHROOM CLEANER TABLET WITH REUSABLE RPET BOTTLE
COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL LIQUID DETERGENT

AFTER 1 CYCLE OF USE (APPROX. 4 MONTHS)

The everdrop bathroom cleaner tab, including its rPET bottle, is already more sustainable than a liquid detergent in several impact categories, after only one cycle of use:

16 % less greenhouse gas emissions

23 % less acidification potential

56 % less water consumption

 

In the categories of ecotoxicity, soil consumption, and eutrophication, we are still slightly behind a liquid detergent after the first cycle of use. The main reason for this is probably the 10 % safety margin we used in this calculation for our products and not for the liquid detergent. In addition, the rPET bottle we have assumed is heavier than that of the liquid detergent (we want ours to be as strong as possible), which negatively affects ecotoxicity and eutrophication. We also have paper packaging: this helps us avoid single-use plastic, but paper production also increases soil consumption.

 

AFTER 3 CYCLES OF USE (APPROX. 12 MONTHS)

After 3 cycles of use, i.e. after about one year, our bathroom cleaner with the reused rPET bottle is already more sustainable in all categories examined:

69 % less greenhouse gas emissions

68 % less acidification potential

53 % less ecotoxicity in fresh water

29 % less freshwater eutrophication

60 % less land consumption

AFTER 9 CYCLES OF USE (APPROX. 36 MONTHS)

Of course, with each subsequent use cycle, the rating of the everdrop cleaning tabs with reusable rPET bottle continues to improve:

AFTER 20 CYCLES OF USE (APPROX. 80 MONTHS)

As of today, the comparison over 20 cycles of use (i.e. more than six and a half years) is still a purely theoretical calculation, as no everdrop product can possibly be more than three years old, as we only sold the first detergents at the beginning of 2020. Above all, sustainability also means looking to the future. And the more we look to the future, the clearer it becomes that refillable tabs or powder products, supplied with reusable bottles really can be a more sustainable alternative for the home.

AFTER 3 CYCLES OF USE (APPROX. 12 MONTHS)

Even with its glass bottle, the everdrop bathroom cleaner tab is by far more sustainable than a liquid detergent after only three cycles of use. The comparison after only one cycle of use, however, shows that the use of a one-off glass bottle does not make sense in terms of ecology. In this calculation, the everdrop bathroom cleaner could hardly compete with the plastic disposable cleaner; only in the category of water consumption does it score 6 % better. Fortunately, our glass bottles are durable and designed to be reused over and over again. And after three cycles of use, the benefits become evident in four of the six categories:

Over time, the everdrop cleaner performs better in almost all categories:

THE EVERDROP TAB WITH REUSABLE BOTTLE IS THE MOST SUSTAINABLE OPTION!

The results show that tab or powder products with reusable bottles have a lower impact: precisely because they are reusable, they pollute the environment less than similar single-use plastic liquid products. 

 

This is mainly due to the following factors:

fewer emissions from transport

fewer raw materials, therefore less CO2- and water-intensive raw materials

no constant bottle production

no bottle disposal (in Germany, for example, plastic bottles are often incinerated)
